Regional Towing

The Columbia and Snake rivers flow through some of the most productive land in the world. From the farthest inland port, at Lewiston, Idaho (located approximately 465 miles from the mouth of the Columbia River), and the multiple ports along the Columbia and Snake rivers, cargoes of grain, wood chips, logs, baled pulp, and fertilizer are transported by barge.

In 1978, Foss barges began moving containers from the upper Columbia/Snake river basins to the port of Portland. Today, weekly scheduled tows transport agricultural products such as peas, beans, lentils, flour, hay cubes, alfalfa products, as well as milk carton stock and dimensional lumber, from the ports of Lewiston, Idaho, and Umatilla, Oregon, to Portland, Oregon for export overseas. Refrigerated containers laden with french fries and other perishable commodities are shipped in special barges outfitted with generators. The refrigerated containers are loaded into the wells of the barge and stacked four high. The units are then plugged into the barge and electronically monitored to ensure proper temperature control.

Foss has dedicated itself to the expansion and movement of agricultural products and other commodities in the Columbia River system.

Marine Transportation

Foss tows ocean barges with wood chips and fertilizer to other West Coast ports, and we specialize in project tows. If it needs to be transported via water, Foss can handle the job.

Shipyard Services

We offer the most completely equipped and staffed yard of its size on the Lower Columbia River. The Foss Rainier Shipyard's two marine railways, with capacities of 640 tons and 85 tons, are sized appropriately for the work vessels operating in the Columbia River area that provide a base for underbody maintenance, hull repairs, shaft repairs, and modifications.

Adjacent to our Foss Shipyard is Foss Rainier Terminal where fresh water moorage, an upland stanging area, plus cargo loading/offloading is available at competitive rates.
