CHIEF ENGINEER
This position carries with it an extremely high level responsibility. The Chief Engineer is highly skilled and trained. This position is responsible for the maintenance, repair and upkeep of all vessel machinery, equipment and operating systems such as main engines, generators, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, air systems, fueling transfer systems, steering gear systems and controls, alarm systems, refrigeration, piping systems, firefighting and lifesaving equipment and deck machinery including winches, capstans and cranes. One is responsible to insure that the level of preventative maintenance performed is consistent with company planned maintenance programs and manufactures recommendations.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Take monthly lube oil samples for analysis. Performs repairs to engines, pumps, and machinery
- Maintains all deck machinery, steering gear, pumps, bearings, packing, valves, electrical systems, sanitary systems and piping systems. Checks the proper operations of engine room alarm systems
- Checks and maintains fuel/fluid levels in all tanks within the vessel
- Responsible for insuring compliance with established fueling procedures
- Notify the Captain and/or Port Engineer of any abnormal changes in the status of machinery operation
- Tags and maintains the various systems values with the proper markings and color-coding
- Troubleshoot machinery malfunctions and perform necessary repairs
- Maintains vessel parts inventory levels. Trains Deckhand Engineers in preventative maintenance procures
- Works on deck including handling lines and towing gear
- Work with vendors and shipyard personnel during planned maintenance periods.
- Other daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly maintenance
SKILLS AND ABILITY
Must have physical ability to push, carry gear weighing up to 50 lbs while climbing ladders and stairs, good balance, pulling of lines up to 100 lbs, bending and stooping when assisting crew with line handling, squatting and kneeling, lifting (including shackles which can weigh up to 100 lbs, climbing on and off vessels and up and down barges, sensitized to the sights, sounds, and motions of the vessel, high manual dexterity required, and moderate agility needed to climb.
KNOWLEDGE OF
- Clerical skills needed to maintain accurate vessel records, including logs of daily activities, condition reports, inventories, drafting work repair orders and parts requisitions.
- Proficiency in the use of a calculator is necessary for calculating factors necessary to determine fuel oil levels, drafts and trim and estimating flow rates.
- Proficient use of a computer; including Microsoft Windows and other applications.
- High degree of mechanical aptitude is required. Strong knowledge of vessel machinery operation, maintenance and repair requirements.
- Proficiency in Math required to make calculation for predicting factors such as estimated times completion, taking measurements such as fuel soundings and to determine volumes.
- Must be able to read, speak, and understand English over telephone and/or radio.
JOB CONDITIONS
- Frequent exposure to inclement weather. Moderate but intermittent exposure to normal accumulations of dust and fumes associated with living spaces and operation of diesel engines. Noise level is high when working in the engine room.
- Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours
- Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take call outs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a valid DDE 4,000 HP license or greater.
- Must have a valid TWIC card.
- Must have a valid USCG Merchant Mariner Document or Merchant Mariner Credential.
- Must be willing to join the union (IBU or SUP) within 30 days of employment.
- Must be willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
